When I Grow Up

by Sarah aka mae mae

When my daughter was 6 weeks old I was taking care of my sister's children due to a family emergency. My nieces were very fascinated with my breastfeeding of their new baby cousin. Every time I would sit down to nurse Isabelle they would pull up their little chairs to watch. By the end of the week they would sit right at the arm of the chair and just watch transfixed. It was better than TV to them. My younger niece who was 4 at the time was asking lots of questions. I always answered them truthfully with the correct terminology yet tried to make the answer so she could understand. I went home at the end of our stay and thought nothing more of it.

When my daughter was 6 months old my family went on our annual vacation up north. We rent the same cottage and stay on the same lake we have been going to since before I was born. I thought nothing of nursing in the cottage in front of my sister's family. She had nursed her children and I knew they would be supportive. Again the whole process transfixed my younger niece. She would sit in a nearby chair and watch every time. My sister was always trying to shoo her away so the baby wouldn't be distracted, but I told her I didn't mind. At the end of the week my niece announced to me in the most serious voice, "When I grow up I am going to have chubby boobies and feed my babies by putting the 'nibble' in their mouth."
