Evolutions of a Husband's Support

Our family has been through quite a few stresses in the last 5 years. I have been pregnant and /or nursing for more than 6 years. In the beginning my husband said I might keep our first born, Josh, in bed with me for 6 months. Josh has just recently asked me to move out of his room and now sleeps all on his own. I now share a room with Jason, 4 and Jesse 14 months.

Back in January, my husband, Dave came home with some news that he had the option to be fired or resign. It was an expected, yet still devastating blow. Without a savings and with me home raising our boys, we were nervous about the future. it was fortunate that he had been dabbling in web design in his spare time and had begun a small business. That evening while talking with his friend and business partner in the web business, I overheard the most wonderful conversation.

The friend said, " Well, Lori can get a job."

Dave answered, "No, she breastfeeds."

Well, Can't she pump?' the friend asked.

My husband answered, "It's just NOT the same."

This conversation shows an evolution in my husband's thinking . He went from saying it's time to wean when Josh turned one year old, to accepting his wife sleeping in the kid's room, to watching his 3 year old Jason nursing along side his third child, Jesse. Not only does he not pressure me to wean, he really understands that breastfeeding is more than "just FEEDING". I especially love when he says, "he needs you, he needs to nurse." Hearing the word "need" puts it all in perspective.
