My Breastfeeding Story

by Cassandra

After a very long labor, and difficulties with Karina's respiratory system, which kept her in special care for 36 hours, breastfeeding could have been difficult. But actually, once the lactation consultants quit trying to force my breasts in her mouth, she latched on naturally.

I never developed sore nipples, engorgement was tolerable, and Karina just loved nursing from the start. I am so thankful that this is how it worked out for us.

I tried to get Karina to take a bottle at 7 weeks, and she cried so i stopped trying. I secretly didn't want her to take a bottle anyway. I had alot of pressure from family and inlaws to get her on a bottle for supplemental feedings...Why? I don't know! I didn't need all the bottles and I really didn't need the $250.00 pump either!

Now Karina is 6 and a half months old...we are experimenting a little with solids..but she isnt too interested...and we nurse alot! and we are loving it!

People tried to make me afraid to get close to her with nursing and sleeping with her and holding her all the time, saying she will not let me rest and I will go crazy. This has not been my experience whatsover. I cherish my days with Karina. I love it! I don't understand people views on this! And, where I am, this seems to be the general consensus..."Don't let your baby get too close."

I feel fortunate and blessed that breastfeeding has worked out so well for us and that we learned to listen to ourselves and our intuition rather than other people.
